I have a 1989 s4 that requires more than the usual amount of effort to turn the steering wheel. Pump does not groan. Should I replace the pump anyway, maybe the pressure line......?

Have you driven other Porsche 928s to determine if the steering is heavier than other Porsche 928s? I'd say the steering isn't "over boosted."
There are two possibilities, the pump may not be working properly, or the steering rack may not be sealed properly. Changing the pump is the easier thing to do first.

Thank you for the response. I had an 83S some years ago, and it was easier. Wondered if a restricted line would cause it......
