fuel pump preasure

I have a 84 928 s, would like to know if any one knows what the pressure should be. I measured at the fuel filter, and injector rails. It was ~120 psi.

That seems really high and i do not even know if that is possible from a stock pump.

Could it be that your gauge is bad, the easy way to check is to try with a different gauge (borrow one) and take a picture for us so that we see where the connection is made.

BTW what name should we call you.

My name is James, and yes I could try another gauge. But what should the pressure be? the only reference I found was 58 psi and 35 gph.

Somewhere around 36psi would be ideal fuel pressure on your '84.

I tested my gauges, and they are good. this is how i made the connection.
1. removed fuel line exiting the fuel filter.
2. attached gauge to the fuel filter.
3. turned on pump
4.gauge reads greater than 100 psi
5. this is the only reference I could find

Walbro Part Number: GCL606
Minimum Current: 12 Volts
Operating Pressure: 58 PSI
Minimum Flow @ Outlet: 38 GPH High Pressure
Fuel Pump Location: In-Line

6. the reason i began investigating in this manner, because i blew fuel pump relay. and i wanted to see if this was a indication of a bad fuel filter or pump.
but both appear to be good. new relays will be here tomorrow.

this would probably be fuel pump spec's. and with zero flow, which was how i measured the psi. it is over 100 psi. but at 60 psi you have established the required flow rate. I believe, I am a chemical engineer not a porsche mechanic, but learning now for 15 yrs.

On the passenger side fuel rail there is a spot to check fuel pressure while the car is running.

This is the normal spot to check pressure so that you can see if the FPR (Fuel pressure regulator) is working right.



I removed my cats so that the exhaust flows better and I ported the heads and I run 56psi. 50 is lots for a stock engine and more is not better in every case.

I hope this helps but it was more then likely just an old relay.
Most on here replace all the relays and fuses just to be safe.

yes, you are correct. new relays will be here tomorrow. I have already investigate that area on the rail. will measure there tomorrow if the car runs. funny thing it was running fine, I had to change coolant recovery tank, and here I am can't imagine what I could have done wrong on the nuckle buster.

120 psi is wrong.......the WSM states correct pressures and how to proceed page 24-8.....good luck

Curious as to "how" it wasn't working. I hear that now and again, but yet we get many payments via Paypal, including one today. Perhaps there is something I can "fix".

yes, thanks it works now.

received new fuel pump relay today. after looking at it and comparing to my old one. I see a difference in the electrical schematic. this relay came from vertek, I also checked with autohaus the offered the same one made by kae. although both show a picture of my original. what do you think, should i use it or not? here is the picture. can't attach picture will have to figure this out.

Make sure (verify by jumping) that is the fuel pump relay
I need to check on the fuel pump schematic before I can say to much more.
Can you take a pic of the fuse panel and the relay that you are replacing?

the relay, that i am replacing is the one on the left. and yes i jumped and fuel pump runs. the schematic on the right is my concern.

got her done, original relay was still good. fuel pressure on the rail 38psi. Found bad ground on the rear of the head on the passenger side.
