Thanks Austin. I just watched the three videos. Even though they were way over my head, they were very interesting and helpful in my understanding of the engine.

I don't care what anyone tells you. Cars are simple. The 928 was regarded as one of the most exotic and complex of its time. Compared to the cars of today, it is rather simple really. With the WSM and all of the infinite internet resources available, you really are only limited by whatever tools you may or may not have immediately available to you. With the right equipment, there is NO TASK too tough for you to take on yourself.
The newer the vehicle, the more difficult it is for a DIY'er. The same is true for even professional technicians. The more computers, sensors, wiring, etc. the more complicated it becomes to fix anything. Pretty soon, no one will be "repairing" anything. We'll simply all be parts changers. In some ways, they've made diagnosing issues simpler over time. In other ways, they've made it nearly impossible to diagnose anything.
The evolution of electrical engineering in automobiles has been remarkable. At one time, it seemed the cars we were making featured both great electrical and mechanical engineering that worked in perfect harmony. Now we're flirting with tipping that good balance we used to have. The further away we get from making cars that mechanically work without any electrical interference, the less dependable and durable they will become.
