Boxing Day

:eek:The US has black Friday, we have Boxing day. Busiest shoping day of the year with gift exchanges returns and year end specials. A great day to stay home and watch football (my Cowboys screwed the pootch again).

Someone mentioned "boxing day" at church today, but I had not heard that phrase before. Glad you explained it.

IIRC boxing day originated as a Brit holiday as there were no sports played on Christmas day so they day after was designated to provide relieve from all the 'celebrations'.

Living in Alberta all my life, I have always just thought of it as the day after x-mas when everything is on sale to make space for new stuff.

Christmas day is a religious holiday and that meant no work period including sport. That carried over to global regions from Britain with the establishment of the commonwealth.

Boxing day is the day after the religious and family gatherings of Christmas where work and sport were permitted by the church who not so long ago ruled all. Back in the day it was mostly men who attended the sporting events and boxing was the sport of the day.

Its only the commercial aspects thats turned the day into what it is today.

Then again, when you see the shoppers battling for 'bargains' on boxing day perhaps the sporting aspect is being reborn
