I am pulling the engine this winter.

of coarse I need to know all of the gaskets that are required.
I would like the colored vacuum lines.
I need all new fuel lines and and the fuel diaphragm in the front.
and anything else that I may require.

I was not planning on it but It has been bothering me knowing that the gaskets may be shifting by now.
I am not sure how the head gaskets stand up.
Some alu blocks/head gaskets last 200 thou, some only last 100 thou, like the chev quad 4. I had to do them every 100 thou.
Is there a definit failure rate or dose everyone just do them because...

Poor coolant choice, or lack of periodic changing, is a common failure cause for 928 head gaskets.

well it had poor coolent when I got it alright. rustoly brown.
flushed it for hours because someone said do not use any cleaner. water dose not clean well.
Dam now I am thinking that I can't let it go another season

Love that clamp! When I take the trans out of my S4 to replace with another one I will use one of these bad boys! How much are they again??? Does Roger stock them?

I am seriously thinking of installing the 928 Motorsports TEC GT Engine Management System (EMS) kit, which is a complete replacement for all of these items on the 928:
The entire stock ignition system
The entire stock fuel injector system
The entire fuel injector wiring harness
The distributor caps, ignition coils, and spark plug wires
The stock LMB (injection) computer
The stock EZK (ignition) computer.
The stock MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor

Brad, I wouldn't worry about the transmission until you're positive it needs more attention than a simple pan gasket/filter job or a slight adjustment. That is, unless you're sure that you're experiencing some slipping. These MB transmissions are tough man!!

On the other hand, if I were you, I would definitely do the head gaskets while you have the engine pulled. Head gasket trouble is much more common on earlier cars for some reason. Perhaps that is just simply for the fact that they're older and that many earlier cars have "sat up" for years at a time whereas the later 928s typically haven't received the same kind of neglect. The only way to replace the head gaskets on your '89 is with the engine out of the car so why not seize the opportunity now, you know? In another ten years, every S4/GT under the sun may have a leaking pair of head gaskets. You never know. It seems a lot of the deferred maintenance issues with 928s surface with owners all at the same time. Look up thrust bearing failure as an example. I am unaware as to when the first failure was reported. However, it seems that it has only become a real enough threat for owners to regularly check their flex plate migration in like the last ten years. See my point? Also, as a long time professional mechanic, I know you know that gaskets don't last forever. Do the head gaskets, man. You won't regret it. :cool:

I have the engine stand, I have been debating if I should go with the hole in the roof and a come-along or a portable engine crane. If my garage was bigger it would be the crane for sure, Hmmm maybe I will rent one, Hmmm.

looked at the gasket kits out there and I hate victor gaskets.
phoned Carl at 928 MS and ta-da bought a good gasket kit (little more money) but .... they arn't cheep gaskets.

For someone who hates VR gaskets you sure bought a lot of them. The gasket set and the Porsche set are both made by VR. The Porsche set is circa $700 and we sell the VR set for $420. I hope Carl did not tell you his set was not VR. He still has the VR boxes in his pictures.

Yes he did mention that the stock porsche is VR.
He is putting together a custom kit for me.

bore sizes: 95,97,100 or 104mm My 89 S4 is a 100 mm bore
thickness of gasket: 0.040. 0.050, 0.056 or 0.064" I chose 0.050

To me service over cost gets my business, but some people prefer to get the cheapest price.
It is good to have both.

I guess I miss understood Carl, Thanks for pointing that out Roger. I went back and clarified it with Carl. He only has custom Head Gaskets. I did see some BBK, and Mr Gasket, Gaskets on line but if they were any good the performance guys would be using them, right. I was hoping for a fel-pro intake set, cost is not a factor if the lower cost part fails.

You can pull the heads on anything '87 forward with the engine in the car. They have bolts, not studs. Which means you have the clearance to do so.

I had forgot that detail about the later models. I tell you what. The hardest part may be just getting the darn valve covers off. That was kind of a challenge for me recently on an '85. Of course that car still featured the studs rather than the bolts, so in my case, the engine had to be out. It must be nice to have bolts rather than studs.

I pulled apart a few '86s, at least one with head bolts. I don't know if they went from studs in '85 or '86 to head bolts, or if I just found one (or more) that had been de-studded already.

Well I had planed on pulling it before I even decided on the list in post #11.

There is a broken lifting stud on the Drivers rear, All hoses need to be changed, new wire harness as in post #11 and just a general climb on into the empty engine bay and fix everything that is not 100% plus repaint or protect in what ever way is required.

Then clean and refresh top end, replace all hose clamps with chrome.
I am still waiting for some venders to get back to me about Stainless steel braided (SB)hose (only one of them has hint hint ) I need the fittings for the fuel rails (M-12?) to the SB hose or to JIC

Bought a new crane to pull the engine with.
with this one I have to slide the legs out and stand them in a holder to put it away. Not the folding legs of the more expensive style.
