Fun on the road

Many of us have been rolling on the highway when the person on the next lane looks like he's getting seizure and its all that they're waving to let you know they LOVE your car! yay! this happened yesterday while driving on NY 278. The lady passenger in a gorgeous Audi A5 was waving and giving me thumbs up when i noticed. Its not the first time, but it doesn't get old. People recognize the 928 and if not, they recognize how beautiful a car it is.

On a side note. I visited Iceland a few weeks ago, i was on the bus from the airport to Reykjavik when getting closer to the city, near one of the few traffic lights, what stops next to the bus? a glossy black 928 S4, at least, couldn't read if it was a GTS or otherwise since the light turned green soon as i looked. I heard to car speed away... that was a nice welcome to my vacation!

Well lets start a video thread then to tell those stories.

Deb and I took the Porsche camping down through BC and put on 4800 kilometers and used up a set of rear tires.

This video below shows where at one point we crossed a small uneven bridge and levt the ground for a second at around 180 Kph.
it was right after that in the 180 k corner the tire squeal started to freak Deb out.

It was quite fun until it started pouring! then it was just ok cause there were so many puddles on the taconic.

NOT so fun on the road.

Saturday morning I was taking my 928 to get an alignment at 8:00 am. Headed out a little early to get the car warmed up some because the shop was only 1/4 mile away. The outside temp was below freezing since there was frost but didn't think much about it. Drove about 1 1/2 miles or so on some very twisty dry roads and was taking them pretty fast. In hind sight, faster than I should have. Hit a bend that turns sharp to the right then turns sharp to the left and at the first right bend the rear end slid out into the on coming lane, counter steered and the rear slid out the opposite way. Counter steered again until I was back in control. Kept the car on the road but if there was oncoming traffic I would have been toast. Scared the shit out of me!

Roads were dry but cold and with my worn summer tires this was not a good combination to drive fast with. I really dodged a bullet! After that, I was thanking God all the way to the shop! Lesson learned!

oh man. thats scary. during this drive i got some water lift on the driver side on some of the straights it scared the isht out of me! there was quite a bit of traffic and people were zooming pass me. im wondering if there's something wrong with me! lol but i made fine! on a sunny day, that is a nice drive. on the way back i was thinking of taking RT 9 south since its really picturesque along the hudson, next time!

High-performance tires are usually "summer-only" tires, with very poor traction under 45 deg F. The first time that you discover this for yourself can be interesting.

interesting is a great way to put it! im considering changing my tires but im on the fence about changing my rims i dont have storage space so new rims/new tires means selling or giving up my current rims. hmm.

ok, had a nice run to PA and back saturday. car performed fairly well. i was concerned about gas mileage before the intake was done. the full run, on this first long drive since out of the mechanics was 225mi i rode that with a full tank from fairly empty, the pump read 16gals. i parked the car with with 1/4 to 1/3 of a tank. if i do the numbers at the highest mileage per gal specs 25mi/gal i get that i should have used about 9gals. i suppose im within spec. considering some of the city miles were done i think i got a pretty good average on gas mileage.

My window sticker (yep I got it,,) has 17 combined on it. I have a 23 gal tank. When I first got it I avg 12-14 mpg before we did anything to it. Last year when I went to SITM I got slightly over 20 in the mountains racing around and highway driving.... I am very pleased with that. If I avg the window sticker I am ok with it, but looks like I might be a little bit better, considering it is an auto......most of my driving is 60+, not too much city here. That helps a lot.

You can improve your mileage on the LH-equipped cars by the way you drive.

With engine speed above about 1438 RPM, and fully closed throttle (idle switch made), the LH ECU totally cuts off the fuel flow. It is really, really difficult to make yourself do it, but if you can totally lift off the throttle at every opportunity - and that means very small downhill runs, well before every slowdown or stop, etc., etc., you can increase the mileage on a trip by 10 - 15%. It seems really counterintuitive, but on and off the throttle gives much better mileage than careful, steady throttle.

Many years ago, that was one of the secrets of the Mobile Economy Runs - "squirt and coast" was the key to high mileage, and it is even truer today, with fuel injection.

Plus with the elimination of the rear muffler, using an RMB, it sounds really cool

With the sharktuner your can toggle on or off fueling on deceleration. Off, and the burble goes away.

Wally - maybe that explains running through the mountains (on/off and coasting occasionally) did not really hurt the mileage....interesting.

Not to get another discussion going, but I have also noticed that cruising at around 75 and using Shell gas is a great combination for mine. Using Shell anywhere gets me better mileage. No hard facts, other than checking it when I fill up. There is something to really good additives it seems. At least in my case

Was off to get some take out last night....nearing a stop sign, drop to idle to burble past a speed yellow convertible 'vette with the top down...20XX, I"m guessing, pretty new. Driver, a man of substantial girth, starts pogo'ing up out of his seat saying hang on, hang on...I roll down the window, and he, with an excited look on his face says- awesome, you give me dat and you take dis! He seemed to be having-a-stroke-earnest, so maybe the vette had a salvage title or something.... I smiled and rolled on, letting the 265s creep out when the 722 hit second...

This brings me to a question though and maybe it should become a thread, but for now.

Why, If people like our cars so much, why do they not own or buy one?

When someone comes over and shows real interest in my/the 928,
and I explain how inexpensive they are to buy compared to any other super car, its like they are thinking, ya right!

I guess, you need to be a car person, for 1
I guess, you need to have around $10,000 to use, for 2 and
Maybe there family situation does not allow it at the time but other then the first to reasons is there a reason not to own a 928?

Its cheaper to get into then any other
Its way different then any other
