Cracked dash question

Has anyone used those dash covers I see out there ? Or any ideas how to repair them ?

There are overlay covers for the dash - but generally they don't look good to most people if your aim is to effect a repair, not simply have a temporary cover. There are ones in carpeting, various fabrics, hard plastic, vinyl or leather. The best solution by far is to recover the dash in either leather to vinyl, or perhaps Alcantara.

You can send your dash away to have it covered (e.g. Paul Champagne or Robert Budd) or you can by a kit to do it yourself (from Budd). The dash removal takes a few hours - you can see some pics in my profile starting about here .

Thanks Martin. I couldn't imagine just adding a cover would do it. If its not going to look good it's not worth doing .so on the list it goes.

I have one paul that I have never really used.
It looks ok but I think its main purpose is to protect the dash from the sun.
I have decided to pay mine forward to a guy thats dash is in really rough shape and could use it.

Mines not to bad it's burgundy in color and I was thinking of changing the dash to black I just wasn't sure how difficult it would be to pull it and replace it

I have one in the garage....if that tells you anything. I just knew I would hate having a cracked dash.....but it did not fit well at all and is....plastic...... So we stopped trying to make it fit and instead, filled the cracks so they would not get worse and I really do not mind them much anymore. I purchased a complete leather interior except for quarter panels (from Robert Bud by way of a 3rd party) and I am just looking for the right place to put it in.

Unless it is falling apart...I am thinking the plastic ones for Coverlay are not really the way to go. But if you want a cheap Blue one... let me know

I would like to repair my arm rest, does anyone know where to get the matching color in paint,dye,aerosol ?

You can closely find the color at almost any hardware store, I purchased a vinyl dye. But even that will crack eventually unless you don't really use the armrest.....really needs to be recovered to last. But as a temp fix, just buy some vinyl dye in an aerosol, remove your lid (easy) and spray it 3 or four times. The one I got dries very quickly, like in 30 minutes or so, between coats. I think it is VHT.

I bought one of those plastic dash covers and if it is very, very dark and you keep your eyes closed you can’t tell the difference. I am going to remove my dash and quit looking for the easy way out on this car!!!

That's to funny! I couldn't imagin it could be that easy.

I have one in my garage also. I have no idea how I ended up with it. Mine also has the pod cover with it. If anybody decide they can't do without one, make me an offer. It's black and I'll throw in the pod cover.

Now that the Blue thing is gone I will be doing the dash in the 928s. Will use our products after fabricating some patches and such. If Leather you can replace sections and redye them. If anything else you can fabricate little areas and the crack fill and dye them to match.

Liquid dye will hold up better than the aerosol, which needs volatiles to spray & dry. It takes a good deal of surface prep. Several restoration places will custom match the dye to your car, Leatherique is one that has provided materials to the 928 community in the past.

And again, I think Chapagne/Budd offer recover and perhaps exchange options.

If the plastic is compromised, garage9 and hookedoncars and possibly others sell reinforcement gizmos.

And we still do at a discount to the forum. Ours will be done with our products as soon as I can get to it. Shoemaker has no shoes, Dye maker has no time for his projects.
