Magnecor Ignition Wires

Folks,

Does anyone have experience with Magnecor Wires? Considering using then and email for the correct stock number. Steve at Magnecor emailed me back to say they offer wires however they are not the same as the factory design spark plug connectors, but the set fits and functions correctly.

Also, any other wire recommendations for my 1986.5

Any help would be appreciated.

I have them in my '90 928 GT. No known problems. The issue with fitment is that they do no seat in the cam covers as watertight as the stock ones (as I understand).

People are quite happy with stock wires, they just aren't inexpensive.

I did this earlier this year. In the course of a lot of research, I got hold of a very detailed article written by someone concerning using this type of wire, saying it was not properly calibrated for the car. In other words, use what the Porsche engineers said should be used. That can be debated of course, but I kind of hedged my bets by purchasing the new wires from 928 motorsports. One reason,,,,they certainly know a lot about 928 performance, and 2, you can get different colors, and 3 they were not super pricey. Having had them till now I can only say that they do not interfere with the radio, mp3 or cd player and seem to otherwise play nice electrically in the engine bay. The car runs better than it ever has (other things contributed mightily to that) and so I am very pleased with my choice. And of course they fit perfectly.
As I have said before on the forum...might not be a high tech answer, just an honest opinion.

I tend to trust the Porsche designers when possible, but I know it is hard to resist the urge to try and improve on their work with modern technology being what it is.

You've got:
Expensive Bosch: Wires with proper looms and sleeves to protect from abrasion. Black. 7.0mm
Cheaper bosch/beru: Likely just wires, maybe looms, no sleeves. Can have wear issues over time. Black 7.0mm

Kingsborne: I don't know of anyone that has used their set on 928, but they supply for some resellers in other markets. Colors. don't recall dia.

Magnecor- I've used on several cars, no problems. Wire/cable and insulation have been good quality and resilient. No looms/abrasion sleeves and they have hemi type (as in chrysler hemi) aprons on the ends that fit over the spark plugs. Not as good a seal as OEM I think they had a 10mm set at one time, not sure whether that is still the case. I think the std set is 8mm.

Nology. Don't get me started, bad experience there.

Others? Used to be able to get some from Lindsay Racing IIRC (10mm), but not anymore...

This is one of the things that pushed me into the purchase of the Tec-GT system/kit. It came with wires, though they are not even close to the stock configuration as my coil packs are now mounted on the fender-wells.

The stock OEM wires work very well.

I also tried Nology but they failed long before what I expected.

You can source the actual Beru wire and reuse the old ends if you have an old set.

I have a custom made set from Magnacore on the Hanson car stroker motor.I haven't logged any actual miles on them other than 5 hours or dyno time and parking lot romps, but I was very happy with the company. The phone call to them was answered by a person and the questions I asked were fully answered to my liking and after a nice conversation I gave them all the lengths and boot/connector types I wanted and they arrived 2 days later and fit like a glove perfectly. I have removed the spark plug ends many times from the cam cover pockets with the engine hot and cold and the worries I had with the boots sliding off and damaging the connections were unfounded. The price was $300 and I will get them for my 85 track car as soon I mock up the routing to my liking.

I have a set of 8.5 mm Magnecor wires on the 86.5. Absolutely no issues with them.
I re-used the stock ignition wire holders but had to drill them out. As mentioned, the stock wires are 7 mm and the 8.5 Magnecor wires are thicker. I snapped together the stock ignition wire holders and drilled them out with a drillbit the same outside diameter as the Magnecor wires.
The Magnecor wires are the same for 85 32V up to 95 GTS (as told to be by Magnecor sales) - the only difference is the coil to distributor wires as Porsche changed the coil connectors in the later years. You can buy just the coil wires separate from Magnecor (which I did - allows me to use the newer coils on the 86.5)
The Magnecor wires fit differently on the spark plug - they do not seal the hole as the stock wires do so extra can should be taken to ensure you do not get liquids spraying in those areas.
Note that I run non-resistor spark plugs in my car with the Magnecor 8.5 mm wires and have no interference on my radio (AM or FM). Had no issues fitting the Magnecor wires on the distributors.
Why did I go with Magnecor versus stock ... I came across a heck of a deal that I just could not say no to. My stock wires appeared to be in good shape but I wanted to change them just to be sure (hell, changed everything else so why not the wires). Have not looked back as no issues to date with these wires.
